Statement of Giorgio Pagano – Radicals/ERA

"The British Telecom Global Services, a UK telephonic company, addressed its national commercial to the public in Esperanto, on the UNESCO-proclaimed International Mother Language Day," declares Giorgio Pagano, Secretary of the Radical Association "Esperanto."
"It is a wonderful initiative, even more so when you consider that in the commercial there are citizens of different nationalities who each speak their own national language, while the British citizen speaks in Esperanto instead of English. It is a way to relaunch the intercultural dialogue in the language of nonviolence, and it is even more valuable if it has been done by a British. It is proof that the Esperantist policy is not anti-Anglophone, but multicultural, the exactly the opposite of the end of multiculturalism celebrated by Cameron a few weeks ago", explains Pagano.

"In this way another overused line of thought falls down. This prejudice, widespread even throughout the people you would least expect, that vindicating themselves against the unbridled extension of Global English, Esperantists are anti-Anglophones, heretics of monolinguism, language-extremists in favour of eliminating other languages. The mulitnationality of the commercial demonstrates that it is not so: all the citizens of the world, including the British ones, love to address their brothers other nations in a neutral language, when the want to convey the message of sharing", concludes Pagano.
