The Radical Marco Perduca and the "Esperanto" Radical Association demand explinations from the Minister of Transport, in the name of Linguistic Democracy
After an Italian passenger was seriously discriminated on a Ryanair flight, the Radical Senator, Marco Perduca, together with the "Esperanto" Radical Association, presented a parlimentary interrogation to Altero Matteoli, the Minister of Transportation.
On a Milano-Brussels flight, an Italian passenger was forbidden to sit near the emergency exist because, not being English mother tongue, the staff did not consider him "qualified" to understand in case of an emergency. According to what criteria, exactly, does an English mother tongue have more right to save himself, in comparison to a French or Italian speaker? Of course, the simple solution would be to supply the safety instructions on the carrier in the home country’s language as well, not to mention the instructions are understood by everyone thanks to the translations and the diagrams. We would like the Minister to take note that it is ridiculous that Airlines continue to reduce the investments in recruiting staff with sufficient linguistic competence, expecting the passenger to adjust his own abilities. In the interrogation, it is noted that it is obbligatory for the staff to speak the language of the place of origin as well as the destination, in order to interact with passengers in case of emergency. The Radical Perduca and the "Esperanto" Radical Association want to prevent that this type of discrimination happening, also in the Italian airlines, and in the airlines that use our country’s airports for stop-overs."
