GERMAN TELECOMS HEAD WINS LANGUAGE BOOBY PRIZE

DORTMUND, GERMANY, NOV 25 (REUTERS) – THE HEAD OF THE GERMAN TELECOMS GROUP DEUTSCHE TELEKOM MAY HAVE WON MANY AWARDS IN HIS CAREER, BUT NONE LIKE HIS MOST RECENT PRIZE — LANGUAGE CORRUPTER OF THE YEAR FOR 1998.
RON SOMMER WAS SINGLED OUT FOR THE LINGUISTIC BOOBY PRIZE BY THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE GERMAN LANGUAGE IN RECOGNITION OF THE TELEPHONE COMPANY’S CONSISTENT ADULTERATION OF GERMAN WITH ENGLISH PHRASES IN ITS ADVERTISING MATERIALS.
DEUTSCHE TELEKOM HAD DONE THE GERMAN LANGU#AGE "A GRAVE DISSERVICE", THE ASSOCIATION SAID, BY USING ENGLISH IN A WAY THAT "CONFORMED SPINELESSLY TO MODERN PSEUDO-COSMOPOLITAN ATTEMPTS AT SHOWING OFF".
A LARGE PROPORTION OF THE GERMAN POPULATION CANNOT SPEAK ENGLISH, WHICH MEANT TELEKOM’S FREQUENT USE OF FOREIGN PHRASES IN ITS ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS WAS "CUSTOMER-UNFRIENDLY", THE ASSOCIATION SAID.
IT CRITICISED PHRASES SUCH AS "MOONSHINE" OR "SUNSHINE" RATES FOR TELEPHONE CALLS, AS WELL AS TERMS SUCH AS "CITY-CALLS", "FREE-CALLS" OR "GERMAN-CALLS" IN THE GROUP’S BILLING PROGRAMMES.
